    The Beginning: An Evangelistic Mission

The story of La Habra Christian Church began in the heat of summer, July 1923, when a passionate evangelist named Clayton C. Root held an evangelistic meeting. This wasn’t just any meeting; it was the first spark that would ignite the flame of what would soon become a thriving congregation. The meeting was funded by the Clark Fund, an organization from Cincinnati, Ohio, dedicated to planting new congregations across the country. This noble mission was overseen by the Christian Restoration Association, and the vision of creating a new church in La Habra was set into motion.

  • October 14, 1923

    A Congregation is Born

On a bright Sunday morning, October 14, 1923, the seeds of the church were ready to take root. After morning services and a basket picnic on the lawn, a call was made by evangelist John LeGrande for people to become Charter Members of this new church. Thirty-six brave souls stepped forward, among them Charles and Ruth Davis, committing themselves to the future of this new congregation. With this faithful step, La Habra Christian Church was officially born. The first building was modest—a tabernacle-style structure at the corner of Cypress and First Avenues—but it was filled with the spirit and hope of a growing church family.

A New Chapel for a Growing Congregation

As the congregation grew in number and spirit, so did their need for a more suitable place of worship. In 1934, the original tabernacle was moved to the back of the lot to make way for a new chapel. This building would serve as a spiritual home for the church for many years. Though humble, it stood as a testament to the congregation’s faith and dedication to their mission.

  • July 31, 1934

    The New Chapel is Dedicated

On a special day, July 31, 1934, the new chapel was formally dedicated. President James G. Hurst of Pacific Bible Seminary, an influential figure in Christian education, delivered a heartfelt dedication address composed by Isaac Erret, a respected leader in the Restoration Movement. Minister David M. Sayers, who led the congregation during this exciting period, stood alongside the congregation as they celebrated this important milestone in their journey.

  • 1947-1953

    Building the Church Family Home

Under the guidance of minister Percy Krewson, from 1947 to 1953, the church continued to flourish. During this time, the congregation saw the addition of a parsonage—a home for the church's minister, which symbolized a growing community and a more permanent foundation. The church wasn’t just a place to gather for worship; it was becoming a hub of life for its members.

  • March 1957

    Expanding for the Future

The 1950s were a time of significant growth for La Habra Christian Church. Under the leadership of Dan Burris, a new classroom building was dedicated in March of 1957, providing much-needed space for the education and growth of the congregation. Hugh Brown, who followed as minister from 1957 to 1963, helped set in motion plans to move the congregation to a new, larger location, showing the foresight of the leadership as the church continued to expand.

    Plans In Motion

Hugh Brown, who followed as minister from 1957 to 1963, helped set in motion plans to move the congregation to a new, larger location, showing the foresight of the leadership as the church continued to expand.

  • 1963-1973

    A New Era of Expansion

During Richard C. Wilson’s tenure from 1963 to 1973, La Habra Christian Church entered a transformative period. It was under his leadership that the congregation moved to its current home at 1400 Fullerton Road in the spring of 1973. The new buildings were a testament to the church’s growth, both spiritually and physically. Carol Elliot, the dedicated church secretary, supported the church through this pivotal time. In July of that year, Galen E. Skinner began his ministry, and with the help of Associate Pastor Bob Leark, the church flourished, with a special focus on youth ministries.

  • 1977-1985

  • 1977-1982

    Transitions and New Leadership

Following Pastor Skinner’s ministry, John Rowe took the reins as interim minister. In June of 1977, Bill Wilhite was called to lead the church as senior pastor. He faithfully served the congregation until 1982, guiding the church through a period of change and preparation for the future.

  • 1982

A Season of Growth and Improvement

In 1982, Ralph Dornette took over as senior pastor, ushering in a season of physical and spiritual growth. Under his leadership, the church saw the enlargement of the fellowship hall, the addition of more parking, and the re-carpeting of the main building. These improvements weren’t just cosmetic; they reflected a congregation that was ready to grow and serve more people.

  • 1985

    More Growth

In 1985, Associate Minister and Music Minister Dan Lanham joined the team, further enriching the church’s ministry.

  • 1988-1990

  • 1988-1990

Freedom from Debt and a New Chapter

In 1988, Richard Crabtree joined the church for a short but significant period. During his 18-month ministry, the church achieved a major milestone—paying off its mortgage. This marked a new chapter for La Habra Christian Church, freeing it from financial burdens and allowing the congregation to focus more on its mission and ministry.

  • 1990 - 1998

  • 1990-1991

    Refocusing on Mission and Purpose

In 1990, the church welcomed Sherman S. Pemberton as interim pastor. His primary mission was to refocus the church on its core purpose—spreading the Gospel and serving the community. By 1991, the congregation asked Pemberton to stay on permanently, seeing the clarity and direction he brought. He was joined by a strong team, including Youth Minister Dennis Laing, Associate Bob Brown, Children’s Minister Greg Gunderson, and Worship Leader Travis Sheets, all working together to advance the church’s mission.

  • 1993

    Rising from the Ashes

In 1993, tragedy struck when a fire destroyed the church’s education building. But out of this loss came an opportunity for growth. The church quickly responded by adding a new Multi-purpose building, providing even more space for education, fellowship, and community outreach. It was a powerful reminder that even in the face of hardship, the church remained strong and resilient.

  • 1998

Serving the Youngest Members of the Community

In 1998, the church took another significant step by establishing an Infant Toddler Learning Center, led by Children's Director Coleen Hartsock. This new ministry allowed the church to serve young families and children in the community, emphasizing the church’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of believers.

  • 2004-2020

    Leadership for a New Millennium

Pastor Randy Lee Atanay served from 2004 to 2020, providing steady leadership for La Habra Christian Church as it entered the new millennium. His team included Assistant Director Tammy Singdale and Youth Pastor Mark Pemberton (2014-2017), along with Associate Pastor Ernie Phillips, Youth Pastor John Fouts, and Worship Pastor Curtis Jessup. Together, they continued to build on the church’s strong foundation, expanding its ministry and outreach.

  • 2017-2019

A Time of Transition and New Beginnings

After Pastor Sherman retired in June 2017, Tyler Thompson stepped into the role of senior pastor. He led the congregation until the end of 2019, working closely with a talented team that included Associate Pastor Jason Kim, Children’s Director Alexis West, Worship Pastor Kurtz Ison, and Youth Director Laney Ribota. This period was marked by growth and preparation for the future.

  • 2020

A New Shepherd in a Time of Crisis

In 2020, during the unprecedented challenges of a nationwide pandemic, Pastor Jason was chosen to lead the church as senior pastor. His leadership brought hope and stability during a difficult time, as the church navigated the uncertainty of the pandemic while continuing its mission.

  • 2022 - Present

  • 2022

    Continuing the Mission

In 2022, the leadership team was strengthened further when Harry Edwards joined as Associate Pastor. Together with the congregation, they continue working to advance the Kingdom of God, striving to raise up new leaders from one generation to the next through the power of the Holy Spirit. The mission remains the same: to serve, grow, and impact the world for Christ.
